from A Wichita Mountains Ontology

In the rutty clatter of the
Narrows: Rattlesnake Island
              our stumbling cusses echoed in
              crumpled cliffs
     a knotted clot of
sand scurf
                   Cambrian bones
         shell teeth scattered by the
left hook
                    of unsigned eons

      The old honeylocust
galled & cankered
                    beckons at
a bend in Panther Creek
            thorn clusters
                   aging red
