Marconi Beach

Midnight moon so bright
it made night
the negative of night.

Waves, late August,
foaming, the same mistakes
over and over

until what’s left
is the flatness of things:
this black stone worn down,

the beach grasses too,
the horizontal lovers
beyond the break.
